2 Kings

The book of 2 Kings offers far more than the history of Israel and Judah—it provides powerful spiritual lessons for believers who desire to walk faithfully with God. Through the lives of Elijah, Elisha, Naaman, Gehazi, Hezekiah, and others, we see the importance of learning from the failures of those who came before us, being faithful in the smallest responsibilities, responding promptly to God’s call, pursuing His best without settling for less, and remaining humble servants throughout our lives. Elisha’s persistence in seeking a double portion, his willingness to begin with lowly service, and his dependence upon the Holy Spirit reveal the character God seeks in those He uses. At the same time, the failures recorded in 2 Kings warn us against pride, covetousness, compromise, idolatry, and divided devotion. From Elijah’s ascent to heaven to Judah’s eventual captivity in Babylon, 2 Kings confronts us with a sobering choice: will we continue upward with God, or gradually drift away from Him?
