That We May Know Him

Who is True

Why I Started Blogging

Why I Started Blogging

I didn’t start blogging because I wanted to be a blogger.

In fact, when someone first suggested that I start a blog, I didn’t even know what a blog was!

This began with something much simpler:

I wanted people to know Jesus Christ.

The Verse That Gave the Ministry Its Name

In early 2020, I was reading 1 John when I came to these words:

“And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding that we might know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.” — 1 John 5:20

Those words stopped me.

John didn’t say that we hope the Son of God has come.

He didn’t say that perhaps someday we might know God.

He said:

“We know…”

And:

“…that we might know Him who is true.”

I recognized my own experience in those words.

The Son of God had come into my life. He had given me an understanding that I might know Him who is true.

And something else struck me:

John was writing to believers.

I had already developed a burden that Christians should not be satisfied merely with being saved, attending church, knowing Christian terminology, or accumulating information about God.

We were created and redeemed to know Him.

I told a sister in the Lord that I wanted to share the gospel with believers, but I didn’t know how to do it.

She asked me:

“Have you ever considered starting a blog?”

A what?

I had never written anything other than letters and correspondence required during my working years.

She explained blogging to me and offered to help me get started. Then she told me I would need a name.

I already had one.

The words of 1 John 5:20 had supplied it:

That We May Know Him Who Is True

But there was another reason behind my desire to write.

It was a lesson God had taught me years earlier—one I have never forgotten.

“I’ll Tell Her Next Week”

About eighteen years before I began the blog, I had a student who had also become my friend. She was in her mid-sixties and had stopped attending church after being hurt by things that happened there.

I repeatedly had the feeling that I should talk to her about the Lord.

And repeatedly, I postponed it.

I’ll talk to her next week.

Another week came.

I said nothing.

Another opportunity came.

Again, I said nothing.

Finally, while driving home one day, I determined that when I saw her at our next class, no matter what, I was going to talk to her about Christ.

The following week, I drove to her house.

Something immediately seemed unusual. Her car wasn’t parked the way she normally parked it.

I rang the doorbell.

No answer.

That was unusual too. She always let me know if we weren’t going to have class.

I went home, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. Eventually, I drove to her workplace and asked whether she had been there that day.

They told me she had suffered a heart attack at work and had been taken to the hospital.

I drove directly there.

She was in ICU, unconscious, with a tube down her throat.

I returned to the hospital for the next three days.

She never regained consciousness.

She died.

I was too late.

The conversation I had decided I would finally have with her never happened.

The opportunity had been there.

And I had postponed it.

I have never forgotten that lesson.

I Don’t Want to Be Too Late Again

Years passed.

Then came 1 John 5:20.

Then came the suggestion that I start a blog.

Then came opportunities to write.

Looking backward, I can see that God was putting pieces together that I did not yet recognize as a larger work.

What began as a blog became a place to share Scripture, the writings of faithful servants of God, Bible studies, sermons, personal testimony, questions, lessons God is teaching me, and above all, an invitation:

Come and know Him.

I have been extraordinarily blessed by Christians who came before me—men and women such as Andrew Murray, Ruth Paxson, Watchman Nee, Hannah Whitall Smith, Jessie Penn-Lewis, Madame Guyon, Charles Spurgeon, and many others.

They faithfully passed on what God had entrusted to them.

Their writings fed me.

Their faithfulness helped me.

Their testimony reached someone they would never meet.

Me.

And now I understand that I have been entrusted with something too.

Scripture says:

“This is the way any person is to regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy.” — 1 Corinthians 4:1–2

I am not the owner of the truth God has shown me.

I am its steward.

And a steward doesn’t bury what has been entrusted to her.

She faithfully passes it on.

This Is No Longer Just a Blog

Today, I don’t think of That We May Know Him Who Is True simply as a blog.

I see a Father’s Table.

Every Scripture, devotional, sermon, quotation, Bible study, personal testimony, and writing is another opportunity to put spiritual food on that Table.

Some people will come through one door.

Others will come through another.

One person may stop because of a Scripture verse. Another may read a testimony. Someone else may encounter a writer who lived hundreds of years ago. Another may hear a sermon.

Different doors.

Different meals.

But one purpose:

That we may know Him who is true.

And I am increasingly aware that none of it belongs to me.

The time doesn’t belong to me.

The ministry doesn’t belong to me.

The message doesn’t belong to me.

I don’t belong to me.

I belong to Christ.

Therefore, the question is no longer merely:

“What do I want to post today?”

The question is:

“Father, what have You entrusted to me to place on Your Table?”

Why Do I Keep Writing?

Because once there was someone I intended to talk to next week.

Next week never came.

I cannot change that day.

But by the grace of God, I can allow what He taught me through it to affect how I steward this day.

I don’t know who will read these words.

I don’t know whether you have followed Christ for fifty years, met Him yesterday, wandered far from Him, become disappointed with religion, or aren’t even sure that you believe He exists.

But I know why you are being invited.

Not merely to read my blog.

Not merely to study theology.

Not merely to collect more Christian information.

You are being invited to know a Person.

Jesus Christ.

The same Christ who met a rebellious young woman who wanted to run her own life.

The same Christ who has patiently taught her for more than fifty years.

The same Christ she is still learning to surrender everything to.

And the same Christ who invites us to press on to know Him.

So while He gives me another day, I want to be found faithfully putting on the Father’s Table whatever He has entrusted to me.

I missed an opportunity once.

I don’t want to miss the opportunity He has given me today.

Lord, may Your name alone be glorified through this endeavor.

That We May Know Him Who Is True.
