The Glory of the New Covenant Message 11

11. Spiritual Enemies And No Earthly Enemy
One of the clearest distinctions between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant is the nature of our enemies. Under the Old Covenant, Israel fought physical enemies such as the Canaanites, Amorites, and Moabites, but under the New Covenant, believers are called to wage war against spiritual enemies—Satan, demonic forces, and the sinful desires of the flesh. The Christian’s battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness, making bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, and hatred toward other people incompatible with New Covenant living. The message challenges believers to refuse all earthly enmity, even toward those who oppose or mistreat them, while zealously putting to death the deeds of the flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit. Just as Israel was commanded to utterly destroy its enemies, Christians must ruthlessly deal with sinful attitudes, passions, and desires, learning to love their enemies, forgive others, and contend for the faith without fighting against people. This is the practical evidence of a life transformed by the indwelling life of Christ.
