All That Jesus Taught-Lesson 61

All That Jesus Taught-Lesson 61

This teaching from Matthew 19–20 reveals that the greatest obstacle to entering and progressing in God’s kingdom is pride rooted in self-sufficiency, whether through wealth, ability, or status. Jesus emphasizes that true spiritual life requires continual humility—becoming small in our own eyes. Through the parable of the laborers, He exposes the danger of serving God with an expectation of reward, contrasting it with those who serve purely out of gratitude. Even His closest disciples struggled with ambition for position, showing that outward sacrifice does not equal inward humility. Jesus ultimately defines true greatness as servanthood, modeled by His own life of self-giving. The central lesson is clear: those who seek nothing but Christ Himself will be closest to Him in eternity, while those who seek reward risk losing the very essence of true spiritual life.

1 John 5:20

And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
