Satan’s Many Names
“Satan” means opponent or adversary. This title is used 56 times, and it always reveals him as the opponent of God and the adversary of man.
Matthew 4:10
Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”
1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
“The devil” means slanderer or accuser. This title is used 35 in the Bible and shows him to be the slanderer of God and the accuser of man. He slanders God to man (Genesis 3:1-7) and accuses man to God (Job 1:9-12; 2:1-7).
Matthew 13:39
The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.
Revelation 12:10
Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.
“The wicked one.” He is the personification of evil, but he is also the source of evil in others.
Matthew 13:19
When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.
1 John 3:8
He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
The devil is a liar and cannot speak the truth. He is a murderer and is focused on the ruin and destruction of mankind. He was the first sinner, and therefore he is the forefather of sinners.
John 8:44
You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
“The tempter.” He tempted the Son of man and he tempts all men.
Matthew 4:3
Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
1 Thessalonians 3:5
For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain.
“The deceiver.” He deceives both individuals and nations. He began his wicked work in Eden by deceiving Eve.
Revelation 12:9
So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
1 Timothy 2:14
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
We read the prophecy of a conflict between Satan and God from the very beginning of the divine revelation. Every page from then on reveals its progress toward its divinely appointed end, the ultimate and absolute defeat of Satan, and the eternal and perfect victory of God.
