Parts of the Heart
The heart consists of four parts: Mind, Will, Emotion, and Conscience. The heart is not a separate part in addition to the soul and the spirit. The heart is a composition of all the parts of the soul (Mind, Will, Emotion) plus the first part of the spirit (conscience). Man does not have more than three main parts in his whole being. We have a body, soul, and spirit, but we do not have a fourth and separate part called the heart.
Proverbs 23:7
7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
Matthew 9:4 says, “Wherefore think ye … in your hearts”?
4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
Thinking is a process in the Mind. Therefore, in the heart, one can think. This proves that the Mind is a part of the heart.
Genesis 6:5 mentions “the thoughts of his heart.”
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
The thoughts are something of the Mind, but Genesis 6:5 mentions the thoughts of the heart.
Hebrews 4: 12 says, “the thoughts … of the heart.”
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
These three passages prove the Mind, an organ of the soul is a part of the heart.
John 16:22 says, “your heart shall rejoice.”
22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
To rejoice is an element of the Emotions, but here the Lord says the heart rejoices.
John 16:6 speaks of “sorrow hath filled your hearts.”
6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
Sorrow is something of Emotion, and these two verses prove that Emotion is also a part of the heart.
Hebrews 10:22 says, “our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience.”
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
If we are going to have a pure heart, we must have a Conscience without offense. Our Conscience must be sprinkled in order to have a pure heart. So the Conscience has a lot to do with the heart.
I John 3:20 mentions “our heart condemns.”
20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things
To condemn is a function of the Conscience, and these verses prove that the Conscience is also a part of the heart.
Acts 11:23: “purpose of heart,” or” purpose in the heart.”
23 When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord.
Purpose is a function of the Will.
Hebrews 4:12 speaks of the “intents of the heart.”
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The intents correspond to the purposes, which are of the Will. This proves that the Will is a part of the heart.
Lord, we do not want to be rejected from being Your priest because we have rejected knowledge. Hosea 4:6
